Amazing Places to Visit in Guinea-Bissau
For someone who is fond of visiting places that are not common, Guinea-Bissau may be the country for you. Most of the tourist attractions and landmarks here are natural destinations like islands, islets, waterfalls, and national parks. The place is small but it makes up for the breathtaking views of the natural attractions herein. 5. Bijagos Islands
One of the places to visit in Guinea-Bissau is Bijagos Islands. Sometimes, they refer to it as Bissagos and it is a group of small islets in Guinea-Bissau (a total of 88 islands in Guinea-Bissau) all scattered in the Atlantic Ocean. Not all the islands in Bijagos are inhabited. All in all, there are about 20 islets that people live in or just visit namely Bolama, Carache, Caravela, Enu, Formosa and Bubaque, among others. 4. Saltinho Waterfalls
The Saltinho Waterfall is a famous waterfall and tourist attraction in the country. You can reach the place by vehicle and a tourist guide is a must especially for the first timers. From the Bissau-Buba road, you have to travel south for less than an hour. When the Corubal River meets the Geba River, the Saltinho rapids or waterfalls are formed. There is a bridge where people can stay and enjoy the view. Other tourists check in at the nearby hotel since the immediate village has others things to see. 3. Joao Vieira and Poilao Marine National Park
Joao Vieira and Poilao Marine National Park is one of the national park in the country and is among of the places to visit in Guinea-Bissau. It is a very young park which was only established sixteen or seventeen years ago. The area is not that massive but the scope is still huge at 495 square kilometers. It is a protected area in the Bolama region and it belongs in one of the Bijagos Islands. Sea turtles are very common in these parts, as well.
2. Lagoas Cufada Natural Park
The name may say that it is a natural park but in truth, it is really a national park. Guinea-Bissau only has five national parks and Lagoas Cufada Natural Park is one of them. It is a Ramsar Wetland site meaning it has an ecosystem worth protecting and as such, animals like chimpanzees, hippopotamus, waterbuck, Roan antelope, African buffalo, leopard, hyena and Arfrican dwarf crocodile all co-exist in the area. It was established back in 2000 and has an IUCN category II national park status.

The most famous tourist attraction and national park in Guinea-Bissau is the Orango Islands National Park. It is also one of the places to visit in Guinea-Bissau if you are a foreign tourist. Like all the other national parks in the country, it was founded back in 2000. The park is not just a terrestrial park. It is also a marine park. The former has a total of 1,582 square kilometers while the latter is humongous at 94,235 square kilometers. The continental shelf of Bijagos Islands is part of the national park.
